TOP TEN: Best Pizza in Los Angeles BY Alyssa Lloyd FOR LA2DAY.COM Jul 25, 2008
There are very few people in the world I would do this for, but my dear reader, you are one. I have searched high and low for the top ten pizza places in LA. I have gotten fat doing it. All for you. Don't get me wrong...it wasn't terrible researching. I love pizza. Only aliens, and those suspiciously alien-like lactose intolerant people, don't love pizza. But to eat enough pizza in a few weeks time to compile a top ten list- this is a mission requiring the greatest devotion and sacrifice of all attachment to body image. So mangia, mangia, L.A.! Enjoy the fruits of my labor...
TOP TEN PIZZA PIES BRAVO PIZZERIA 2400 Main St, Santa Monica, CA 90405 * (310) 392-7466 My favorite local haunt for a slice, this cheerful little spot on Main Street can always be counted on for friendly banter, generous slices, and maybe the best NY-style pizza on the westside. I dream about their Cheese Explosion- a perfect blend of mozzarella, ricotta, and parmesean cheeses, accented with whole garlic cloves and little heaps of tender spinach. Cheese lovers beware- you may find yourself craving at random times, or all the time. Don't worry, they're open late.
MOZZA 641 N Highland Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038 * (323) 297-0101 OK, so I've yet to have a less than astounding meal at Mozza and it is pretty much my version of heaven on earth. Hence, I wasn't surprised when Pizzeria Mozza altered my life with their Bianca pizza. Good god. Sottocenere (black truffle cheese), fontina, and crisp, fried sage leaf all come together on a chewy, crispy crust for a beyond holy experience. Mozza's pizzas are not huge (I housed mine- alone) and are definitely pricey but, come on- black truffle cheese?! It's so worth it.
ANTICA PIZZERIA 13455 Maxella Ave # 201, Marina Del Rey, CA 90292 * (310) 577-8182 Antica pizza is classic Neopolitan pizza, with a barely there crust and wood-fired perfection. The margherita is like no other here, with it's smooth, subtle tomato sauce (basically just pureed tomato) and homemade (in house) mozzarella.
CIAOTI PIZZA 4346 Tujunga Ave, Studio City, CA 91604 * 818-761-3588 Find the man behind California pizza behind his own counter here. Ed LaDou, largely recognized as the founding father of California pizza cuisine, developed his pizza chops in traditional (Frankie, Johnnie's and Luigi Too!) and experimental (Wolfgang Puck's Spago) settings and went on to create the menu for CPK. Now he continues to whip up utterly unconventional old and new world pies for your eating pleasure in the comfort of his own kitchen.
ABBOT'S PIZZA 1407 Abbot Kinney Blvd, Venice, CA, 90291 * (310) 396-7334 The fact that you can always choose from at least five (often, twice that) creative, gourmet slices, makes this hole-in-the-wall pizza haven truly genius. With an extensive, highly vegetarian friendly menu and devoted following, Abbot's has been on to something for years. Just be careful if the Salad Pizza- an actual tossed salad with avocado over a fantastic sour cream and cheese crust- is getting low. Local fans have been known to fight over the last slice.
MULBERRY STREET PIZZA 240 S Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90212 * 310-247-8100 Thin crust, East-Coast style joy, with an especially stellar tomato sauce. Pies are HUGE and you can buy ‘em whole or by the slice.
CALIFORNIA PIZZA KITCHEN (all over) I don't like chains and rarely find myself in them, but this chain has Pizza in it's name for goodness sake. Their original, slightly sweet dough, bakes up into a perfect, fluffy crust every time and the menu boasts eternal favorites like the original BBQ chicken pizza. I'll be completely honest...I've only ever had the BLT pizza here. I just can't bring myself to order anything but this divine mayo-tossed salad, crisp bacon and cheese creation. IL MORO 11400 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064 * (310) 575-3530
Il Moro pizza wins the title for thinnest crust in town. Just a
delicate wafer of dough allows the high quality, organic ingredients
to spring into focus. With tempting gourmet combinations and complex
flavors, the best thing about this pizza is that it is light enough to
gobble a whole one up in seconds- and then try the pasta. We liked the
Ortolana- a tasty red sauce and cheese base topped with marinated
eggplant and delicately grilled asparagus stalks. LAMONICA'S 1066 Gayley Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90024 * 310-208-8671 If you're after NY style pizza, this little shop with it's NYC subway décor will do you right. The crust is the stand out feature, by far...thin but crisp and thick enough to support the weight of the toppings. Basic but perfectly balanced.
VITO'S 846 N La Cienega Blvd , Los Angeles, CA 90069 * (310) 652-6859 Top notch ingredients lovingly sprinkled and spread by charming and earnest owner himself? That’s right. At Vito’s you’ll be welcomed into a cozy nest of casually gourmet creations. Try the ricotta pesto pie, or the meatball and jalapeno, or the wild mushroom, or, or, or…Just be sure to say hey to Anthony for me.
